تَجْوِيد القُرْآن Al-Lughah Al-'Arabiyyah — The Arabic Language

Is this course right for you?

This course is for students who can already read the Qur'ān and want to recite it with the beauty, precision, and correctness it deserves.

Students who can read the Qur'ānYou should be able to read Arabic text before starting Tajweed — the course focuses on refining your pronunciation, not building basic reading skills.
Those who read but without rulesMany students read the Qur'ān fluently but without formal Tajweed. This course gives that reading the precision it deserves.
Students correcting specific errorsIf you know your recitation has particular mistakes — a letter pronounced incorrectly, rules not applied — this course systematically corrects them.
Advanced students seeking excellenceThose who already have good Tajweed and wish to refine and deepen it further — reaching the level of Itqan (excellence) in their recitation.

Before you begin

You need nothing except a willingness to learn.

Ability to read the Qur'ānYou must be able to read Arabic text before joining this course. If you cannot yet read fluently, complete our Qur'aan Reading course first.
A copy of the Qur'ān (Mushaf)You will read directly from the Qur'ān in lessons. A standard printed Mushaf or digital app is sufficient.
A good microphoneTajweed is an oral science — your teacher must hear every sound clearly. A decent headset or earphones with a microphone is strongly recommended.
Daily recitation practiceTajweed rules only become natural through repetition. Reading Qur'ān daily and consciously applying the rules between lessons is essential.

What you will learn

The Tajweed Rules programme covers the full science of Qur'ānic recitation — from articulation points to elongation rules — in six structured modules. Each builds on the last, ensuring a strong and lasting foundation at every stage.

01
Makharij Al-Huroof
The science of articulation points — where each letter originates in the mouth and throat, and how to produce it correctly.
  • The 5 articulation areas (makhraj)
  • 17 specific articulation points
  • Heavy and light letters
  • Correcting common mispronunciations
02
Sifaat Al-Huroof
The characteristics of each Arabic letter — the qualities that make every sound unique and distinguishable.
  • Hams & Jahr (breathed/voiced)
  • Shiddah, Tawassut & Rakhawah
  • Isti'la & Istifal (elevation)
  • Applying characteristics in recitation
03
Rules of Noon & Meem
Master the four rules governing noon sakinah and tanween — among the most commonly applied rules in Qur'ānic recitation.
  • Idhhar (clear pronunciation)
  • Idgham (merging)
  • Iqlab (conversion)
  • Ikhfa' (concealment)
04
Rules of Madd (Elongation)
The rules governing elongation of vowels — one of the most distinctive and beautiful aspects of Qur'ānic recitation.
  • Madd Tabee'i (natural elongation)
  • Madd Muttasil & Munfasil
  • Madd Lazim (obligatory elongation)
  • Counting and applying beat lengths
05
Waqf & Ibtida
The rules of stopping and starting — knowing where it is correct, preferred, permissible, or prohibited to pause in recitation.
  • Types of waqf (stopping)
  • Signs in the Mushaf explained
  • Beginning after a stop (ibtida)
  • Preserving meaning through correct pausing
06
Applied Recitation & Consolidation
Apply all learned rules in live recitation — reading passages from the Qur'ān with full Tajweed application and teacher correction.
  • Reading complete Surahs with Tajweed
  • Self-correction techniques
  • Common errors and how to avoid them
  • Consolidation and ongoing refinement

Taught by someone who truly knows the language

Tajweed is taught by both Shaeeb Ali and Umm Muādh. Umm Muādh's Masters in Qur'ānic Exegesis and Sciences means she brings exceptional depth to the Tajweed curriculum — understanding not just the rules, but their scholarly basis and historical transmission.

Both teachers hold their knowledge in a chain connected back to those who received it directly — the tradition of Tajweed transmission that stretches back to the Prophet ﷺ himself.

ش
Shaeeb Ali
Arabic & Islamic Studies
Umm Muādh and Shaeeb both bring exacting standards to Tajweed teaching — gently correcting each error and ensuring that rules are not just memorised but truly heard and internalised in the student's recitation.

Do I need to know Tajweed to pray correctly?
Your prayer is valid if you recite Al-Fatiha to the best of your ability. However, the obligation to learn to recite correctly is established in Islamic scholarship. Learning Tajweed is a means of honouring that obligation and deepening your connection to the Qur'ān.
Is Tajweed difficult to learn?
Some rules feel natural quickly; others take more time to become habitual. The most important thing is patience and consistent practice. With focused small group teaching, most students are surprised by how quickly their recitation improves noticeably.
Can I do Tajweed alongside Qur'aan Reading?
Yes — this is actually a very effective combination. Learning Tajweed rules in dedicated lessons while applying them in ongoing Qur'ān reading creates a powerful feedback loop that accelerates both skills.
I have been reading the Qur'ān for years — is it too late to correct my Tajweed?
It is never too late. Many of our students are adults who have recited the Qur'ān for years and are now ready to do so properly. Old habits take time to correct, but with focused small group teaching it is very achievable.
What is the difference between Tajweed and correct reading?
Correct reading means recognising letters and vowels accurately. Tajweed is the application of the specific rules — elongations, merging, nasalisation, articulation — that give Qur'ānic recitation its distinctive beauty and precision. Both matter.
